The UN Independent International Fact-Finding Mission on the Islamic Republic of Iran, established in 2022, has found “reasonable grounds” to believe the U.S. committed war crimes with its strikes on the Minab elementary school and a sports center in the opening days of the U.S.-Israeli war on Iran, in a report released on Thursday. The Feb. 28 U.S. attack on the Minab school killed at least 150 people, including approximately 120 children. A few hours later, another strike hit a “clearly identifiable sports complex and residential area” in the southern Iranian city of Lamerd, where 22 people were killed and more than 100 were wounded a few hours after the Minab school was hit.

“The Mission found reasonable grounds to believe the United States committed the war crime of launching indiscriminate attacks resulting in the loss of life or injury to civilians or damage to civilian objects,” the UN fact-finding mission wrote in its report which has been submitted to the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva.

U.S. Central Command tried to blame the Lamerd strike on Iran but that assertion was rejected by weapons specialists who examined the available evidence and identified the weapon used as a Precision Strike Missile (PrSM). The PrSM warhead is packed with 180,000 tungsten pellets and bursts in the air, making it particularly lethal over a wide area. Two of these missiles were used in the Lamerd strike. “The Mission concluded that the US by choosing to use the PrSM missile in a populated civilian area, under the prevailing circumstances, launched an attack that struck civilians and civilian objects reckless as to the likely extent of death or injury,” UN fact-finders said.
