China presented a sample of the Moon’s far side to the United Nations in Vienna on Sept. 14, for permanent display at the UN Office for Outer Space Affairs, Xinhua reported. The sample comes from the 1,935.3 grams that Chang’e-6 brought back from the South Pole–Aitken Basin in 2024, the first material ever returned from the far side. “Lunar samples from the far side are so rare, but this one, thanks to China, belongs to everyone,” said UNOOSA Director Aarti Holla-Maini. China had already awarded lunar samples to foreign scientists for research.
