Citing her stepdaughter’s death and a lack of energy to withstand the many attacks on her in connection with the increasing inner-coalition frictions, German Labor Minister Baerbel Bas (SPD) resigned yesterday, being immediately replaced by former Rhineland-Palatinate Minister President Alexander Schweitzer (SPD). Bas also resigned as co-chair of the SPD.

The role of Bas in giving the general OK for cuts in the social, labor and pension areas has been pointed to by critical Social Democrats blaming her for the SPD losses in recent elections. Deep disappointment of voters has made the “labor vote” migrate to the opposition AfD party recently.
