Israel’s National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir said on Oct. 1 that he will ask the security cabinet to seek the extradition of the Omani co-pilot accused of stabbing the captain of flydubai flight FZ1073 and trying to crash the plane on its way to Tel Aviv on Sept. 30. “Someone who planned to crash a plane and murder 180 Israelis should be extradited to Israel and pay the heaviest price here,” he said. He wants the Justice Ministry and diplomats to “use all means available,” but as the Times of Israel noted, Israel has no diplomatic relations with Saudi Arabia, which is investigating, or with Oman, and no extradition treaty with the UAE, which is to take custody of him afterward.
Prime Minister Netanyahu told Fox News that the co-pilot “underwent Islamist radical indoctrination” and was “suicidal,” and said, “I think it’s too early to say whether there was Iranian collusion,” according to The Media Line. The co-pilot had flown for flydubai for about nine months. Transport Minister Miri Regev has asked the Shin Bet to halt all flydubai flights to Israel, on the grounds that the airline’s agreement with Israel requires its pilots on Israel routes to come from countries with normal relations with Israel, and Oman is not one, the Jerusalem Post reported. The captain, Indian national Smit Machchhar, was wounded; two relief pilots on board, one of them British, landed the plane in Tabuk.
