Ukraine is trying to convince Poland that it has its neo-Nazis under control.

The most recent resurgence, on October 20, had the Lviv Regional Council (LRC) declaring 2027 to be the Year of Roman Shukhevych and the UPA. Both are infamous for collaborating with the Nazis in World War II in the murder of Poles, Russians, and Jews. The Council reportedly decided to organize “cultural, memorial, scientific, and mass media events,” as well as exhibitions and national-patriotic rallies in their honor.

Shukhevych was first a commander of military forces—the Nachtigall Battalion—for Stepan Bandera’s OUN-B and later became the Supreme Commander of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army. Polish historians cite Shukhevych for a major role in the murder of the Jews of western Ukraine, the massacre of Lviv’s professors and, later, of tens of thousands of Poles in eastern Galicia.

Ukranews reported Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski’s Facebook posting where he announces his request to add Lviv City Council member Sviatoslav Sheremet—“a reenactor of the Waffen-SS ‘Galicia’ and the originator of the idea to declare 2027 the Year of Roman Shukhevych, commander of the UPA, who issued orders for the deportation and murder of Poles”—to the list of persons undesirable in Poland.

RBC Ukraine cited an informed source to make the (as yet unconfirmed) report that Poland was about to transfer a major military aid package, but the LRC’s action has caused Poland to suspend it. The source said: “Because of their irresponsible actions, the delivery of this package has now been suspended. Active efforts are underway through back channels to resolve a problem that was created out of nowhere.”
