The Swiss Council of States (Ständerat) has approved the controversial Bilaterale III Treaty with the EU, which makes the creeping and hidden campaign of integration with the European Union much more blatant. The treaty, which contains the “dynamic” adoption of EU law, passed with a 2:1 majority. However, the Council also mandated a referendum, which includes not only the popular vote, but also the vote of the Cantons. This is seen as an obstacle, since smaller rural cantons are more EU-skeptical.
This is not the last word. Next there will be a debate and a vote in the National Council (Nationalrat.) That result could reverse the Ständerat decision.
