According to UN agencies, in 2026 Yemen has had 8,034 suspected cholera cases and 27 deaths—but 25% of these cases occurred in just the last 4 weeks. The UN News service reported yesterday that Yemen has 22,800 suspected measles cases with 128 deaths, mostly among children. There are vaccines for both of these diseases, but only 45% of children have taken the necessary two doses. Malnutrition is also on the rise.
Health conditions in Yemen are rapidly deteriorating, amidst mass displacement of people and warfare. An estimated 5.2 million people are living in refugee camps with virtually no services. (The City of Los Angeles, CA has a population below 4 million—ed.) The shortages of food and medicines, overcrowding, unsanitary refugee camps, lack of clean water, and cuts in humanitarian aid have created conditions of a biological breakdown. According to the UN World Food Program over 18 million people face acute food insecurity and 800,000 people have been cut off from supply lines due to the shifting battle front.
