Angela Merkel, Germany’s longtime Chancellor (2005-21), put the issue of stopping nuclear war as the central issue, in an interview with the BBC, released today, where she declared: “We must do everything possible to prevent the use of nuclear weapons....
“We shouldn’t be paralyzed by fear, but we must also acknowledge that Russia is the biggest, or alongside the U.S., one of the two biggest nuclear powers in the world. The potential is frightening.”
She went on to praise China for its attempt to deal with provocateurs. Last week, Beijing’s Foreign Ministry stated that “all relevant parties need to remain calm” and “jointly seek de-escalation … through dialogue.”
Her comments stand out among Western politicians afflicted with allergies to common sense.
