Mainstream media have inflated figures on victims of the repression in Iran, in order to spread the narrative of a “genocide,” aimed at potentially justifying a foreign intervention.
According to mainstream media, there are more than 30,000 victims of the repression against the “protests” in Iran. For instance, according to Time magazine, hospital figures alone for the Jan. 8-9 crackdown suggested approximately 30,000 fatalities. The Guardian reported more than 36,000 dead, based on “independent” outlet claims for the same two days.
This violently clashes with the report by Human Right Activist New Agency (HRANA), a U.S.-based, anti-regime, Iranian organization abroad. Human Rights Activists in Iran (also known as HRAI and HRA) describes itself as a non-political and non-governmental organization of advocates who defend human rights in Iran. HRAI was founded in 2005.
According to a report posted on Feb. 15 by HRANA giving the latest aggregated data as of the end of the 50th day since the beginning of the protests, the total number of confirmed fatalities has reached 7,015. Of these, 6,508 individuals have been registered under the category of “protesters.” A total of 226 of those killed were under the age of 18. Additionally, 214 members of military/government forces and 67 “non-military, non-protester” individuals have been reported dead. Another 11,744 cases remain under review.
