The Belgrade-Budapest Cortanovici tunnel, which is part of the double track high-speed rail project being built to link the two cities, is nearing completion. Consisting of two parallel tracks with a length of 2.2 km, the project is being built by the Russian RZT International and will permit trains with the speed of 200 kph. RZT has been involved in the modernization of Serbian railways. Serbia recently purchased 27 diesel trains manufactured by the 1897-founded Moscow Metrowagonmash.
The boring for the Cortanovici tunnel was begun in 2017, which makes the completion somewhat faster than the over five-year construction of Wiesbaden-Mainz bridge over the Rhine. The line between Belgrade and Novi Sad on the Danube should be completed in 2021. The new Novi Sad rail bridge should be opened in September 2020.
