Lavrov Warns Against `Foreign Mediation’ in Belarus We Recall How That Turned Out in Ukraine

Aug. 19 (EIRNS)—In statements today reported by TASS, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov warned that those who are proposing a “mediation” for Belarus, should deal directly with government authorities, rather than “through a microphone.” For all those who say that mediation is the only way out of the current situation in Belarus, he said, they should “not forget how our Western colleagues ‘mediated’ in 2014 during the Maidan [protest] in Kiev. Back then, esteemed representatives of the European Union ‘mediated’ and reached agreements, but we all remember what it turned into.” He pointed out that Belarusian government authorities are open to dialogue with society, and that this should be allowed to proceed, rather than attempts to provoke an “incendiary” situation. He warned that media and social networks are already producing such “incendiary” videos and messages and that provocations are being launched against law enforcement officers.
