Chinese Defense Minister Takes Part in SCO Defense Ministers’ Meeting

Chinese Defense Minister, General Wei Fenghe, was in Moscow last week, meeting with the defense ministers of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization. He also used the opportunity to hold bilateral meetings with his colleagues as well. He held a meeting with his Indian counterpart and the two agreed to deal diplomatically with the border dispute. Wei, somewhat pointedly, also said that the indian government should keep control over their units on the border. Wei also held a bilateral meeting with his Pakistan counterpart and with the Russian Defense Minister, where they also discussed international and regional issues.

Wei Fenghe said that China has always adhered to the path of peaceful development and is committed to building a universally safe world. “The Chinese military is fully determined, capable, and confident to defend its national sovereignty, security, and development interests. It is willing to work with all parties to earnestly implement the consensus of the heads of state, carry forward the “Shanghai Spirit", and continue to create a new situation in bilateral and multilateral military cooperation to safeguard the world.” And reflecting recent comments by President Xi, Wei said that the SCO should also react against “bullying” from other powers.
