Executive Director of the World Health Organization Health Emergencies Programme Dr. Mike Ryan hit the nail on the head at the last of the organization’s weekly press conferences of 2020. He reviewed all the positive elements of the mobilization in the war against Covid-19: “We’re in a better place on behavioral science, clinical science, vaccine science, diagnostic science, so many other areas in terms of that. But we’re also in a better place on things like supply chains and collective production of guidance and rapid dissemination of training... .” He summed up: “And I will say one thing, and that may come as a shock to people: This pandemic has been very severe... But this is not necessarily the big one...This is a wake-up call… We live in an increasingly complex global society. These threats will continue. If there’s one thing we need to take from this pandemic with all of the tragedy and loss, is that we need to get our act together. We need to get ready for something that may even be more severe in future. In this, we must honor those we’ve lost by getting better at what we do every day.”
