In the fog of war, reminiscent of the provocations in Kiev 2014, there is a lot more spin than reality regarding who provoked the attack on the Capitol. The added problem is the uncertainty over any investigation carried out by the FBI’s Christopher Wray.
A number of congressmen are raising the possibility that agents provocateur associated with Antifa were involved in the breach of the Capitol, although no concrete proof has yet been provided. For example, Rep. Paul Gosar (R-AZ) wrote that the incident has “all the hallmarks of Antifa provocation,” and retweeted a video that claimed that some of the individuals who stormed the Capitol Building were “dressed up and had knee pads.” Congressman Matt Gaetz (R-FL) stated on the floor of the House on the evening of January 6: “I don’t know if the reports are true, but the Washington Times has just reported some pretty compelling evidence from a facial-recognition company showing that some of the people who breached the Capitol today were not Trump supporters. They were masquerading as Trump supporters. And in fact, they were members of the violent terrorist group, Antifa.” This news service has also received reports from participants in the demonstrations that they saw a busload of provocateurs arrive at a certain point and agitate the crowd into entering the Capitol.
