Plea bargains are ending the prosecutions of some of the hundreds of Americans arrested for their involvement at the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6. In addition to offering to plead guilty to such crimes as “parading, demonstrating, or picketing in a Capitol building,” defendants are asked to recant their political views as part of the deals.
Despite assertions by such Justice Department officials as Assistant U.S. Attorney Joshua Rothstein that “we don’t prosecute people based on their beliefs,” that appears to be the case for Anna Morgan-Lloyd. Her court-appointed defense lawyer gave her a list of books to read and films to watch, and expressed her satisfaction with her reformation: “Though she supported the past President in January, she totally accepts President Biden as the leader of our country.... She has worked hard to come to terms with what she believed before January 6, 2021 and what she has learned since then.”
