The U.S. can’t legally do anything to interfere with the transit of two Iranian ships in the Atlantic Ocean because as naval ships in international waters, they have sovereign immunity. This point (which should be obvious to anyone) was made by Cornell Overfield, an associate research analyst at CNA, in an article published by Foreign Policy yesterday, in response to calls by idiots like Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) that the U.S. “must act” to prevent the ships from arriving in Venezuela, their suspected destination. “However, any U.S. action against these vessels would be unlawful and undermine a core tenet of the international order: sovereign immunity,” Overfield writes. “The costs of direct action would be severe, exposing the United States to charges of hypocrisy toward the rules-based order and potentially opening U.S. naval vessels to similar treatment by adversaries.” https://foreignpolicy.com/2021/06/10/venezuela-sanctions-iran-warships-law/
