There is relief in Byron, Illinois, today, after the State Senate voted up a clean-energy bill yesterday that will keep the city’s nuclear plant running for the next six years. The plant was to have closed yesterday. The bill passed the Senate by a vote of 37-13, reported Rockford, Illinois NBC affiliate WREX TV, and will now go to Gov. J.B. Pritzker for his signature.
There are certainly other parts of the energy bill that are undesirable, including big subsidies for wind and solar, but keeping the nuclear plant going for another six years is a major victory. Among other things, the bill includes a $600 million bailout for the Exelon company that will allow it to keep the Byron plant open, along with the NPPs in Dresden and Braidwood.
