As a result of a cabinet shakeup a few days ago, Boris Johnson has a new Foreign Secretary Liz Truss, MP from Norfolk, who took over the job on Sept. 15. Truss dropped an op-ed into the Telegraph today which, among other things, is a strident defense of the AUKUS agreement. Freedoms, she declared, “need to be defended, so we are also building strong security ties around the world.”
She said that, as a result of the AUKUS agreement, “We will be working closer together to use a wide range of cutting-edge technologies, from nuclear-powered submarines at first and then looking at artificial intelligence and quantum computing. It shows our readiness to be hard-headed in defending our interests and challenging unfair practices and malign acts. It also shows our commitment to security and stability in the Indo-Pacific region.”
But it’s not just about security. “For example, our new security pact will not just make us safer at home, it could also create hundreds of new and high-skilled jobs, from the shipyards of Govan to the factories of Tyneside,” she said. Meantime, her predecessor Dominic Raab has been named Deputy Prime Minister, Lord Chancellor, and Secretary of State for Justice.
