The CDC released preliminary data on Wednesday, showing that 96,779 Americans died from drug overdoses in the year from April, 2020 through March, 2021 – a 29.6% increase over the previous 12 months. They estimate that the total will be around 99,100. Opioids led the field, with second place held down by its cousin, (non-methadone) synthetic opioids.
