Blinken Promises ‘Massive Consequences’ if a ‘Single Additional Russian Force’ Enters Ukraine

Secretary of State Antony Blinken dodged the question of whether or not the U.S. will send combat forces to Ukraine during an appearance on CNN yesterday, but still promised consequences for Russia if it invades. “Do you see any scenario in which more U.S. service members become involved here?” CNN’s Dana Bash asked Blinken on “State of the Union.” Blinken responded that the North Atlantic Treaty Organization is preparing “massive consequences” for Russia if a “single additional Russian force” enters Ukraine. The phrase “single additional Russian force” is clearly intended to “correct” – i.e., override – President Joe Biden’s formulation of last week that the U.S. response will depend on the size of a Russian incursion into Ukraine.
