Members of the Florida National Guard are training Ukrainian soldiers to operate sophisticated weapons in Germany, according to the Pentagon. About 50 Ukrainians have been trained using a howitzer, a long-range weapon. The trainees will also learn how to use radar systems and armored vehicles. Training will also take place in other European countries. The trainees will be able to return to Ukraine, where they will train others in the latest NATO techniques. U.S. President Joe Biden said in late March that U.S. troops were training Ukrainian forces in Poland, but this remark was later walked back by military officials. Russia has warned Western countries against arming Ukrainian forces. In March Russia attacked a Ukrainian military range near the Polish border. At the time the Washington Post reported the Russian Defense Ministry had said the facility was a “training center for foreign mercenaries” and a storage base for weapons and equipment sent to Ukraine by “foreign countries.”
