The European Union is holding its summit over May 30 to June 3 at which Russian sanctions and other measures promise to split the EU leaders. Citing EU sources, TASS reports that the Committee of the Permanent Representatives of the Governments of the Member States to the EU, or Coreper, failed to reach a compromise on even a light version of and anti-Russian oil embargo on May 29 after Coreper’s extraordinary meeting ahead of an EU summit.

“Today, Coreper held a meeting to discuss the issue of the ban on [Russian] oil supplies. We will have to consider extra details at another meeting on Monday” May 30, the source said. “I can say that all the countries are determined to restrict Russian oil supplies but we need extra coordination.”

The summit will decide on a sixth package of sanctions which the source hopes will at least create “a positive dynamic” if not an agreement.
