African Union Welcomes the New ‘Black Sea Grain Initiative’; Mackey Sall Cites Meeting with Putin

The African Union Commission issued a statement late July 22 welcoming the new “Black Sea Grain Initiative” between Ukraine and Russia to allow grain exports out the Black Sea. In the statement, AU Commission Chairman Moussa Faki Mahamat also praises AU Chairman Mackey Sall, President of Senegal, “for having called for the urgent need for the resumption of cereals from Ukraine and Russia to global markets as made to President Vladimir Putin during a joint AU mission to Sochi” in early June. Sall tweeted, “This was the objective of the mission I led in Sochi on June 3.”

In the statement, Commission Chairman Mahamat also thanked Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who worked on the new arrangement, as well as thanking Putin, and Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. (https://au.int/sites/default/files/pressreleases/42069-pr-english.pdf)
