China has developed and tested a first in space, a “space sail” which is made to clear space junk out of orbit. It reminds of the sunshield of the Webb Space Telescope, because the “sail” is one-tenth the width of a human hair, but 270 square feet in area. It was launched and successfully deployed to attach itself to a spent Long March rocket which was floating around in orbit. By attaching at the rear of the rocket, the “sail” spread out and created drag to slow the rocket down and accelerate its fall into the atmosphere for burn-up.
