Russia Identifies Odessa Missile Strikes as Hit on Harpoon Missile Supplies

Russian Defense Ministry spokesman Lt. Gen. Igor Konashenkov stated July 24 that the missile strikes in Odessa on July 23 were by Russian Kalibr missiles, and hit: a depot storing U.S.-made, British-supplied Harpoon anti-ship missiles used by the Ukrainian Armed Forces; and a Ukrainian Navy warship in the port. This statement reversed the initial reports out of Turkey that the Russians had denied involvement in the missile strikes.

Speaking at a press conference in Oyo, Republic of the Congo, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov emphasized that “The targets on which high-precision strikes were delivered were located in a separate, military part of the Odessa port. These included a Ukrainian Navy combat boat and an ammunition depot that had recently received Harpoon anti-ship missiles to threaten the Russian Black Sea Fleet. Now these ‘harpoons’ do not pose a threat to us,” and that “the grain terminal of the Odessa port is located at a considerable distance from the military unit. There are no obstacles to start delivering grain to customers in accordance with the agreements signed in Istanbul,” on July 22. He specified, moreover, “that there is nothing that forbids us to continue a special military operation, destroying military infrastructure and other military targets.” (https://mid.ru/ru/foreign_policy/news/1823767/)
