The French party Solidarité et Progrès issued the following statement on Aug. 3, on on the situation in Taẅan:
PARIS, August 3, 2022 - France must disassociate itself from the deliberate provocations of the U.S. government aimed at Taiwan.
First of all, the visit of Nancy Pelosi, the third-ranking official in the U.S. government, is a violation of China’s territorial integrity, of UN General Assembly Resolution 2758, and of the 1979 Sino-American Joint Communiqué on the establishment of diplomatic relations. Worse, Pelosi continued her “visit” despite China’s warnings.
However, this is only the tip of the iceberg. At the suggestion of two senators, one Democrat and one Republican, the U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee is considering legislation to provide billions of dollars in arms shipments to Taipei that would not only be defensive in nature. Sanctions against China are being considered and the U.S. government is recommended to “establish relations with the democratic government of Taiwan as the legitimate representative of the Taiẅanese people.” This text, which would constitute a de facto recognition of Taiwanese independence, is a senseless provocation in the very context of Mrs. Pelosi’s trip.
Solidarité et Progrès stands in solidarity with the Chinese people against this attempt to “divide and conquer,” which is in keeping with the British and then Anglo-American imperial tradition in the Far East.
