UN Secretary General: World 'One Misunderstanding' Away from Nuclear Annihilation

During the Monday meeting on nuclear weapons at the United Nations, Secretary General António Guterres warned that the world is just “one misunderstanding, one miscalculation away from nuclear annihilation.”

“Crises with nuclear undertones are festering, from the Middle East and the Korean Peninsula to the invasion of Ukraine by Russia and to many other factors around the world,” he said in the General Assembly Hall. Nations are “seeking false security in stockpiling and spending hundreds of billions of dollars on doomsday weapons that have no place on our planet,” he warned.

While Guterres’s warnings are correct, the threat of nuclear war must be addressed today not by taking on missiles themselves, but rather by identifying and replacing the geopolitical and financial paradigm that is driving the world towards their use.
