Leila Zerrouki, the Foreign Ministry’s special envoy for international partnerships, stated on state radio that Algeria had filed an official application to join the BRICS. Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune recently said the country was interested, and Russian Ambassador to Algeria Valeryan Shuvaev indicated that Moscow had no objections to Algeria joining. Such a move would harken back to Algeria’s founding and leadership role in the Non-Aligned movement beginning in 1961.
