Lafontaine: Zelensky Wants WWIII, but We Urgently Need Peace

In an article for the German nachdenkseiten journal, former Linke Party leader Oskar Lafontaine wrote on Zelensky: “Sometimes he calls for a no-fly zone, sometimes he wants pre-emptive strikes against Moscow, sometimes he demands nuclear weapons for Ukraine. Then he claims, contrary to the truth, that the Ukrainian defensive missile that killed two Poles was fired by Russia. And now he demands that NATO protect the Russian-occupied Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant from sabotage. He says that NATO must do that because it would be important for the whole world.

“Even the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, which like many other quality media outlets is a warmonger, has now noted, ‘Selesnski wants to drag NATO into war.’

“With his constant calls for an expansion of the war, for a reconquest of the Donbas and Crimea, Selenski proves only one thing: He has long ceased to represent the Ukrainian people, the majority of whom want a ceasefire and a peace settlement, despite other claims in the propaganda press.

“Only those who do not put their own lives at risk are always drumming for war. In his famous song “Le déserteur,” French chansonier [singer—ed.] Boris Vian wrote: “S’il faut donner son sang / Allez donner le vôtre / Vous êtes bon apôtre / Monsieur le Président.” Leobald Loewe translated it into German: “You swear in parliament, / blood must be shed, / so let yours flow, / dear President!”

“One can be sure that many Ukrainians and Russians have similar sentiments when they think of their presidents. This is an ancient theme, of which the poet Horace said, ‘Dulce et decorum est / Pro patria mori.’ Sweet and honorable is to die for the fatherland — with such an “ethic” innocent people died on the battlefields for millennia. It is time for ceasefire and peace negotiations, because every day Ukrainians and Russians fall victim to this lying “war ethic.”

“P.S.: On Monday my book ‘Ami [friend—ed.], it’s time to go! Plea for the self-assertion of Europe’ (Westend-Verlag) was published. It is a contribution against war and for reason and humanity to finally prevail.”
