NATO Chief Stoltenberg Responds to Putin’s Suspension of New START

Flanked by Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba and EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg told a press conference at the NATO headquarters that Russian President Vladimir Putin’s announcement of the suspension of the New START Treaty “makes the world more dangerous.”

Stoltenberg said that he regretted the decision announced by Putin on Tuesday during his address to the Russian Federal Assembly, adding: “With today’s decision on New START, the whole arms control architecture has been dismantled.” Stoltenberg then called on Russia “to reconsider its decision.” U.S. Secretary of State Tony Blinken made similar comments.

Stoltenberg also dismissed any responsibility for the war in Ukraine by Global NATO, saying that it was “Putin who started this imperial war of conquest.” He further stated that Putin was preparing for more war, and that he “must not win,” adding that it would be “dangerous for our own security and the whole world.”
