Honduras Announces Break with Taiwan, New Diplomatic Relations with China

In a tweet issued yesterday, Honduran President Xiomara Castro announced she had instructed her Foreign Minister Eduardo Reina to “initiate the opening of diplomatic relations with the People’s Republic of China as a sign of my determination to comply with the Government’s Plan and expand the frontiers of freedom in the concert of the nations of the world.”

She further reported that “we shall seek to establish the most cordial and friendly diplomatic relations with the People’s Republic of China and with the communities of Asian and African nations which seek relations with us.” During her 2021 election campaign, Castro had indicated she intended to establish ties with the P.R.C., and now has taken that step, causing great distress in Taiwan, whose foreign ministry urged her not to “fall into the China trap,” and make a terrible mistake. With the Honduran decision, Taiwan now has diplomatic ties with only 13 nations worldwide.
