A statement was issued supporting the March 17 ICC arrest warrant against Russian President Putin for alleged war crimes, signed by most EU justice ministers. Hungary, however, did not sign. Hungary is committed to peace talks between its neighbor, Ukraine, and Russia, considers that such action by the ICC further demonizes the Russian President and complicates any effort at a peace process. Asked whether Putin would be arrested if he came to Hungary, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán’s chief of staff Gergely Gulyas, told a briefing that the Rome Statute is not incorporated into the Hungarian legal system.
