London’s The Economist tweeted that “In February, [President of El Salvador] Nayib Bukele’s approval rating reached 90%, the highest in Latin America. The biggest reason for this is a sharp drop in violence during his presidency. In 2015 El Salvador had the highest murder rate in the world, 106 per 100,000 people. Last year, according to the government’s figures, this had dropped to 7.8. That rate puts the country on a par with the United States. If its murder rate stays down, Mr. Bukele’s influence in the region will grow.”
So far it’s been reporting. Time for The Economist to offer its brilliant analysis:
“Tap on the link in our bio to read why this is dangerous for democracy and human rights.”
Not being murdered seems like one of the most important human rights, wouldn’t you think? (https://www.economist.com/the-americas/2023/03/16/el-salvadors-authoritarian-president-is-becoming-a-regional-role-model)
