This week’s featured US train derailment involves a BNSF Railway train carrying ethanol and corn syrup. (Evidently, turning corn into fuel and hauling it around the country is not as stupid as carrying it on a decrepit rail system.) Around 22 cars derailed near Raymond, Minnesota, early this morning, several of them catching on fire. Residents were evacuated from the area. BNSF specialists report that “continued mitigation” is underway. Cause of the derailment is under investigation. The National Transportation Safety Board says that it is launching a team to conduct a safety investigation into the incident. Stay tuned to what goes up in smoke next week.
