Germany May Cut Back Further Weapons Deliveries to Ukraine

Over the last two days, numbers of media outlets are citing German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius’ interview with Welt am Sonntag, published April1, in which he said, according to the Reuters report, “We all know that the existing gaps [in military requirements] cannot be completely closed by 2030.” Reuters went on: “Pistorius rejected further arms deliveries to Ukraine from the Bundeswehr stocks beyond the announced commitments. ‘To put it bluntly, like other nations, we have a limited inventory. As Federal defense minister, I cannot give everything away,’” he was quoted as telling Die Welt. Reuters cited unnamed experts that Germany’s defense industry is already worn down by decades of underinvestment since the end of the Cold War, and now the Bundeswehr is in even worse shape than a year ago given that weapons and munitions donated to Ukraine have not for the most part yet been replaced.
