The German national umbrella organization of peace groups issued a statement today, “Cluster Bombs in the Ukraine War,” which denounces Western plans to send these weapons to Ukraine, and warns against escalation into nuclear war:
“The Federal Committee for Peace (Bundesausschuss Friedensratschlag) takes the following position on the planned delivery of cluster bombs to Ukraine, which are outlawed under international law:
“The delivery of cluster munitions to Ukraine, which are outlawed under international law, and its justification by Federal President Steinmeier represents a further low point of double standards and duplicity in German politics. It is grotesque to stick to the German government’s previous position on rejecting cluster munitions on the one hand, but at the same time to show total subservience to the U.S., saying that ‘Germany cannot fall into the U.S.’s arms in the current situation.’
“Cluster munitions not only represent an escalation of belligerent terror against the civilian population, but in Ukraine will lead to the large-scale contamination of arable land that is particularly valuable there and is also relevant for global food security.
