Seventy invitations to the Aug. 22-24 BRICS Summit in Johannesburg have been sent out, but so far the guest list is reserved for leaders of nations among the Global Majority, or “Global South.” South Africa’s News24 media has reported that no leaders of Western nations have been invited, including President of France Emmanuel Macron, who had requested an invitation.
News24 said that on July 20, South Africa’s BRICS emissary Prof. Anil Sooklal revealed during a media briefing that all the 54 African heads of state or government have been invited to the summit, and that the invitations had also been extended to all the heads of states in the Global South.”
Sooklal said: “President Ramaphosa took a decision to invite the entire continent to the BRICS-Plus [summit] as well as all of the political heads of the major Global South bodies. So, in total about 69 leaders have been invited.”
