According to French news website L’Orient-Le Jour, President of the United Arab Emirates Mohammed bin Zayed is planning to organize a meeting between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Russian President Putin during the upcoming COP28 Summit in November. This year’s COP summit will take place in Dubai.
According to reports, Pope Francis had been encouraging Zayed to extend this offer. The report also indicates that several other European nations have been involved with Abu Dhabi in this initiative, being conscious of the UAE’s potential role as mediator between the two. While there are details of Zayed’s proposal available, the report says that the purpose of the meeting is to initiate a dialogue that could eventually play a role in bringing the war to an end. The UAE has maintained a good relationship with Russia following Russia’s SMO in Ukraine, and Zayed has traveled to Russia over the last year to meet with Putin.
