President Joe Biden visited Hanoi after the G20 summit in India, where he raised U.S. ties with Vietnam to the level of “comprehensive strategic partnership.” The effort to drag Vietnam out of the Chinese orbit was not hidden—he said the agreement puts the U.S. relations with Hanoi “on a par with that of Beijing’s and Moscow’s.” This is far from the truth, as China-Vietnam trade is over $300 billion annually, more than double that of the U.S.-Vietnam trade.
