An Aug. 31 article in the [Washington Post] (https://www.washingtonpost.com/immigration/2023/08/31/border-families-record-crossings-biden/?utm_source=alert&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=wp_news_alert_revere&location=alert) reports that a record number of families crossed the U.S.-Mexico border illegally during the month of August. A total of 91,000 family groups were taken into custody by U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), beating the previous record of 84,486 set in May of 2019. Meanwhile in the U.K., British authorities report 872 migrant arrivals via the English Channel on Sept. 2, an all-time high for 2023.
At the U.S. Southern border, total individual number of arrests for August, which include all members of family groups, as well as single individuals, was 177,000, a significant increase from 99,539 in June. Altogether CBP recorded 230,000 “encounters” during August including both legal and illegal attempts to enter the U.S.
In order to facilitate legal entry, the Biden administration has developed an app for mobile phones, called CBP One, which allows migrants to schedule an appointment with CBP at a designated entry point with the limit being set at 1,450 individual appointments per day. However, this is a sick joke, as migrants using the app report all appointments are filled within five minutes each day, and most have difficulty trying to establish a WiFi connection in order to make use of the app.
