According to the coverage on CBS News, the first ever appearance of the Five Eyes intelligence chiefs together occurred last week. The five (U.S., U.K., Australia, Canada, New Zealand) came together in Palo Alto, California, to meet with executives from 15 Silicon Valley firms, as well as leaders at Stanford University. Apparently they made the point that the technologies which will determine future abilities to spy and control, namely AI and computing technologies, are all being cornered by China.

Interviewed for “60 Minutes” by Scott Pelley, Pelley introduced the show by calling China the “greatest espionage threat democracy has ever faced.”

“The People’s Republic of China represents the defining threat of this generation, this era,” FBI Director Christopher Wray told him. “There is no country that presents a broader, more comprehensive threat to our ideas, our innovation, our economic security, and ultimately our national security.”

The focus was on threats to intellectual property rights, including losses to shareholders and jobs.
