Gaza War Bringing on Humanitarian Catastrophe

As of late on Oct. 11, the Israeli death toll is reported to have surpassed 1,200 with another 3,007 wounded. That death toll includes 189 IDF soldiers. The Palestinian death toll is reported to be at least 1,100, with 5,339 wounded, plus another 27 dead and 150 wounded in the West Bank. The Palestinian dead are said to include 260 children. The death toll on both sides will keep rising, but especially in Gaza, as the Israeli bombardment continues and bodies are recovered from the rubble.

UN agencies working in Gaza are warning of a humanitarian catastrophe developing there because of the Israeli bombardment. “The Gaza Strip will witness an unprecedented humanitarian catastrophe if safe corridors are not opened for the arrival of humanitarian aid, including medical supplies, food, and water,” Adnan Abu Hasna, spokesman for the UNRWA, told Anadolu. Israel is continuing to close all border crossings with the Gaza Strip, making it impossible for any humanitarian aid to enter. “The coming hours will see Gaza run out of fuel and hospitals out of service,” Abu Hasna said. “Continuation of the situation means that the Gaza Strip will be without food within two weeks.”

Israeli airstrikes have displaced more than 260,000 Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, the UN humanitarian office said. “Over 263,934 people in Gaza are believed to have fled their homes,” the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said in an update on Oct. 10. Fears are mounting that the number of displaced Palestinians in Gaza will increase amid continuing Israeli attacks and Hamas rocket fire. The UNRWA said late that day that more than 175,000 people in Gaza have taken refuge in 88 of its schools.
