Chinese Foreign Ministry Warns That a Biden-Xi Meeting Will Take Hard Work

Although a possible meeting between U.S. President Joe Biden and China’s President Xi Jinping has been mooted for the Nov. 15-17 summit of the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation Forum (APEC) in San Francisco, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin made clear that this will not occur automatically.

Asked about the possibility of the meeting at today’s press briefing, Wang gave a thoughtful answer: “[T]he two sides have agreed to work together for the meeting between the two Presidents in San Francisco. In the meantime, it won’t be plain sailing to San Francisco, nor can we leave it to autopilot to get us there. The two sides need to return to what was agreed between the two Presidents in Bali and truly act on it. What is vital is for both sides to rise above disruptions, overcome obstacles, expand common understandings and accumulate potential outcomes.”
