The Netherlands Defense Ministry wants to seize four large plots of land for new barracks and weapons storage, from a province wrested from the sea after World War II, dedicated almost entirely to agriculture and tourism. Seventy farmers were notified by Defense that their land was under consideration for conversion.
The agricultural and horticultural organization LTO responded: “We don’t get it. Do farms on fertile soil have to yield to store weapons from other countries? That would be bizarre. We are NATO’s most densely populated country.”
