Calls for a “minimalistic government,” as coming from Argentina’s President-elect Javier Milei, but also from right-wing corners in Europe and elsewhere in the world are not original. Here is an excerpt from Benito Mussolini’s first speech in the Italian Chamber of Deputies, on June 21, 1921:

“On the other hand, to save the state, you must perform a surgical operation. Yesterday the Hon. Orano said that the state is similar to the giant Briareus, which has a hundred arms. I think you should amputate 95 of them. I think that it is necessary to reduce the state to its purely juridical and political expression.
