Spain Vetoes EU Participation in Operation ‘Prosperity Guardian’

According to Spanish newspaper El Confidencial, reported TASS, Spain has vetoed the EU participation in the “Operation Prosperity Guardian” in the Red Sea. The Spanish government was initially in favor, but eventually changed its opinion.

On Dec. 20, the EU’s Political and Security Committee had unanimously approved the community’s participation in the initiative by expanding Operation Atalanta. Operation Atalanta is a EU naval deployment against pirates off the coasts of Somalia, which is backed by a UNSC resolution. The rotating commander is currently a Spanish general.
