Finnish Foreign Minister Plays Down the Hyped ‘Russian Military Threat’

Finland, which once had to fight Russia single-handedly, has responded much more calmly to the current war hysteria erupting from NATO. While Finland, right on Russia’s border, is prepared to join NATO and to deploy NATO troops on Finnish soil, the government is not echoing the recent NATO hoopla about the “imminent danger of war.”

In an interview with SRF broadcaster yesterday, Foreign Minister Elina Valtonen stated that Helsinki does not believe that a “direct military threat to Finland emanates from Russia.” Nevertheless, the Nordic nation must be prepared for any scenario, the diplomat stressed, adding that the country is “working with our allies on a credible deterrence.”
