Pakistan and Iran Attack Terrorists in Each Other’sTerritory, as China Offers Mediation

Overnight, Pakistan carried out an attack on what it said was a terror base in Iran. The attack occurred one day after Iran had bombed a terror base in Pakistan in an area bordering Iran. Islamabad said the Iranian attacks killed two children.

Türkiye’s Hürriyet Daily News reported from Islamabad that Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry stated: “This morning Pakistan undertook a series of highly coordinated and specifically targeted precision military strikes against terrorist hideouts in Sistan-o-Baluchistan province of Iran.” It added that a “number of terrorists were killed…. This morning’s action was taken in light of credible intelligence of impending large-scale terrorist activities.” Of note, Pakistan also said that they have no interest in escalating the situation.

For its part, the Iranian government said that three women and four children had been killed in the Pakistani attack. Referring to Iran’s own attack in Pakistani territory, a government statement said that its attacks had targeted the Jaish al-Adl group in Pakistan. Iran had also launched attacks in Iraq and Syria against what it called “anti-Iranian terrorist groups.”
