April 2, 2024 (EIRNS)—Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas seems set to become the next secretary general of NATO. Estonian World, “an independent online media outlet, founded in London in 2012 and headquartered in Tallinn,” reports that Kallas has won the backing of the United States, France, Germany, and the United Kingdom to replace current Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, after Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte reportedly fell out of favor. It is said to be understood that Rutte was disqualified because of the Netherlands’ “dismal record” on defense spending. “What moral credibility does this guy have,” Toomas Hendrik Ilves, a former Estonian President, asked recently, referring to the Netherlands’ failure to meet its NATO commitment to spend 2% of GDP on defense during Rutte’s 13 years as prime minister.
