Baltic Sea Becoming a Flashpoint for NATO-Russia Tensions

Deputy Commander-in-Chief of the Russian Navy, Admiral Vladimir Kasatonov, warned in an article for the Ministry of Defense magazine “Military Thought” that Russia sees the potential threat to the Baltic Sea fleet from US missiles stationed on Bornholm Island in the Baltic Sea. Kasatonov, reported avia-pro.net, recalled that last fall the United States deployed a mobile medium- and shorter-range missile system “Typhon” on Bornholm, which can hit naval targets within a radius of up to 400 km. The complex uses Standard-6 anti-aircraft guided missiles of the Aegis air defense system, which fly along a quasi-ballistic trajectory.

“The presence of Tomahawk cruise missiles with a range of 2 km (sic–obviously an error, he likely said 200 km range -ed.) in the Typhon complex will create a threat of destruction of naval forces and facilities in the basing areas. Taking into account the accession of Finland and Sweden to NATO, this threat to the Baltic and Northern fleets will only increase.,” Kasatonov noted.
